53 dead in China building collapse, search for trapped ends

A building collapse one week ago in central China killed 53 people, state media reported Friday as the search of the large pile of debris ended after rescuers found 10 survivors. Authorities said at a news conference that all the missing had been accounted for as of 3 a.m., state broadcaster CCTV said in an online post. The residential and commercial building in the city of Changsha suddenly collapsed the afternoon of April 29. Jiangyin in Jiangsu province reported 46 COVID-19 cases on Thursday. The county-level city of Wuxi had already reported two confirmed and 41 asymptomatic cases on Tuesday and Wednesday. It barred the operation of all vehicles on Friday, except ambulances, fire trucks and those that support the basic operation of the city and asked residents to not leave the city. Beijing reported 66 new domestically transmitted COVID-19 infections during the past 24 hours, a disease control official at the Chinese capital said on Friday.
